“The City” DVD – The classic 1939 documentary film with a newly recorded soundtrack, recorded by PostClassical Ensemble, Angel Gil-Ordóñez conducting
Aaron Copland’s attempt to create an “American” style embraced both a lyric “rural” side and a vision of the city combining solitude and an angular skyscraper energy. PCE explores “Copland and the City” via the bracing modernism of his 1930 Piano Variations, the anomie of “Quiet City” for chamber orchestra, and his film score for “The City” (1939).
The auditorium of the Phillips Collection will feature 1930’s photographs as a complement to this unique concert, which incorporates commentary by PCE Executive Director Joe Horowitz.
