Sedona was first inhabited by Native Americans who settled there about 1,000 years ago. They created their homes by carving out caves into cliffs using stone tools and firewood for torches. The name “Sedona” comes from Spanish words meaning “red rocks.” The first Europeans arrived in Sedona in 1873 when they built a military fort there called Camp Verde (now called Fort Verde State Historic Park).
Today many people visit this area because they want to see its stunning scenery including red sandstone formations called hoodoos which look like giant mushrooms sprouting up out of nowhere!
